RCSEd Events for School Pupils

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is one of the four Surgical Royal Colleges in the UK which exist to examine surgeons, help enhance their training and to represent surgeons and their interests. As an aspiring surgeon, you may not come into frequent contact with us just yet, but we hope that maybe one day you will join our Affiliates, Members and Fellows from around the world in being part of our organisation.

RCSEd 'Getting into Medical School Symposium'

2017
The presentations from the 2017 Getting into Medical School Symposium are listed below. If you have queries about these please email outreach@rcsed.ac.uk.
2015

RCSEd’s ‘Getting into Medical School’ Symposium took place on 25 July 2015 and aimed to advise S4 – S6 school pupils on all aspects of the application process as well as the options open to them beyond this.

The event was convened by Mr Zahid Raza, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, one of RCSEd’s Regional Surgical Advisers and a selector for Edinburgh University’s Medical School.  Speakers at all stages of their medical career – from students through to a military surgeon – as well as representatives from four of the five Scottish Medical Schools were invited to give students an honest insight into the process.

The video above captures all of the day’s talks and is a must-watch for anyone thinking about applying to study medicine.

For further information about this event please contact our Outreach Team at outreach@rcsed.ac.uk.

Pathways to the Professions

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh participates each year in the University of Edinburgh's Pathways to the Professions programme. If you are a school student at any of the 46 state schools in Edinburgh and the Lothians in S4-S6 and interested in a career in medicine or surgery, please register with the programme or speak with your careers adviser at school to ensure that you receive information about the 'So You Want to be a Doctor' careers day.

This is an annual event which includes presentations from various medical professionals, and allows you to experience some hands-on workshops dealing with communication skills and practical skills such as: tying and knotting, resuscitation and intubation, laparoscopy and a visit to the College's Surgeons' Hall Museum.

Visit the University of Edinburgh website for more information.

Annual Christmas Lecture

Every year the College organises a lecture in December for secondary schools in Edinburgh and the Lothians, which is held at the College in Edinburgh. This event features an outstanding and inspirational guest speaker.

Please contact the Education Team at education@rcsed.ac.uk for more information.
