The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is committed to supporting its membership by providing guidance and resources for lifelong surgical professional development, including continuing professional development (CPD).

Continuing Professional Development: A Summary Guide for Surgery

A CPD guidance document was produced by the Royal Colleges and the Federation of Surgical Specialty Associations. This Guidance document can be viewed here.

Core Principles for Continuing Professional Development

In June 2016, the Colleges and Faculties agreed the ‘Core Principles for Continuing Professional Development’. The document was also considered by the Academy’s Education Strategy Committee who welcomed the guidance as a modern, clear set of principles that aligns well with the GMC’s recommendations.

This guidance was welcomed and endorsed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and can be viewed here.

RCSEd CPD Guidance 

In August 2011, the Directors of CPD Sub-Committee of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges produced a CPD Guidance document which has been approved by College Councils. This Guidance document can be viewed here. We welcome feedback on this document at cpd@rcsed.ac.uk.

In January 2018, the enhanced CPD scheme was launched for dentists and will be starting on 1 August 2018 for dental care professionals.  A guidance document can be found here.

CPD Application

You can apply for an event to award CPD by completing an application form and returning it to the College's Education department. In addition, the event programme and the proposed evaluation form should be submitted with your application. These documents should be sent to the following email cpd@rcsed.ac.uk.

The College takes up to 14 days to review each CPD application. Submissions received less than 14 days prior to the date of the event will incur an additional 50% late submission fee charge.
