The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is proud to support our Members and Fellows in their research endeavours through a number of pump priming grants and research fellowships. Each funding opportunity aims to support not only the career of the individual but also the College’s vision to lead innovation in surgery and dentistry.

John Winton McNab Research Grant in Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare

The John Winton McNab Research Grant provides up to £10,000 to one individual to undertake pump priming research which focuses on healthcare concerns, surgical, dental or otherwise, that are prevalent in remote, rural or humanitarian contexts, including those associated with conflict.

Applications are welcomed from Surgeons, Dentists or other allied healthcare professions, who are Affiliates, Members or Fellows of RCSEd or its Faculties. Research can be conducted in the UK or Internationally.

This opportunity has been made possible through the gift of John Winton McNab, a beloved Fellow of RCSEd.

The James Weir Foundation Research Grants

The James Weir Foundation Research Grants intends to support five pump priming research projects annually. Research should focus on one of the following specialities: Robotic Surgery, Dentistry, General Surgery or Orthopaedic Surgery. Up to £10,000 is available for each specialty. Alternatively, for research projects based in Scotland, £10,000 is available for research in any surgical or dental specialty.

Applicants should be Core Trainees, specialty Trainees, SAS Doctors, LEDs or Consultants who are within five years of their first post. The principal applicant should be a Member or Fellow of RCSEd or its Faculties. Research can be conducted in the UK or Internationally, unless applying for the Scottish based grant.

The Cutner Research Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery provides £60,000 for one year’s salary and is intended to support Members and Fellows in conducting research in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Applicants should be Core Trainees, Specialty Trainees, SAS Doctors, LEDs or Consultant who are Members or Fellows of RCSEd. Research can be conducted in the UK or Internationally.
