The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh recognises the serious picture painted by Lord Darzi in his review of the NHS and welcomes the government’s commitment to taking long-term action to address the root causes of the problems.

College President Prof. Rowan Parks commented:

This report is stark but not surprising. The scale of the problems that beset the NHS are well known and it is right that the government is looking to ensure that the solutions treat the cause not the symptoms.

Prof. Parks added:

NHS staff give everything every day, and their commitment and dedication remains the single biggest asset the health service has, but we have seen how that is put at risk by burnout and stress caused by the circumstances they work under. It is vital that any programme of reform or renewal puts the NHS workforce at its heart.
