The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has announced the appointment of Mark Egan as Chief Executive following a successful period as interim CEO.

Mark brings a wealth of experience to the leading medical college after initially taking on the role in January 2023.

Having spent more than 25 years working in Parliament to help support politicians manage and conduct legislative work, Mark is well placed to drive forward the College’s key priorities.

Commenting on his appointment, Mark said:

I'm delighted to have been given the opportunity to serve as Chief Executive of the College on a permanent basis.

It is a privilege and a tremendous opportunity to lead such a prestigious institution and to be able to contribute towards making a positive difference in healthcare.

As part of his strategic priorities, Mark aims to bolster the wellbeing of healthcare workers whilst fostering a sense of unity and collaboration within the College and ensuring public confidence in the profession.

Adapting to the post-pandemic landscape, Mark and his team are also working to create a stronger structure for a hybrid model that ensures effective exams delivery both domestically and internationally.

Mark said:

I’m dedicated to leading the team at RCSEd towards a future where excellence in surgical education, unwavering standards, and patient-centric care can thrive.

We also have a huge focus on the wellness of staff and what support we can provide, and how we can organise things to allow staff to feel as included as possible, whilst ensuring all voices are heard.

I am incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by a team of exceptional individuals within the College who are passionately dedicated to their work.

Professor Rowan Parks, President of RCSEd, said:

I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to Mark on being offered the permanent role of CEO of the College.

Over the past six months, Mark's dedication, experience, and vision have impressed us all, and we are thrilled to have him leading us as we aim to make a lasting difference to all members, patients and teams.
