2023 marked a significant year for the Faculty from launching our Membership and Fellowship awards to celebrating our five-year anniversary! Not to mention a trek around the globe, supporting some key events all with the shared goal of advancing remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare globally.

In this article, we reflect on some of the highlights from 2023.

Faculty Supported Events

2023 was an adventurous year for FRRHH, as we ventured worldwide to support some valuable events across the field of remote, rural, humanitarian and global healthcare.

Our first trip of the year led us to Mombasa, Kenya for the 2nd International Congress on Innovations in Global Surgery (ICIGS)The Congress, led by the Innovations in Global Surgery (IGS) group, brought together over 250 clinicians, engineers, biomedical engineers, software programmers, and other professionals from over 25 countries.

The Faculty was pleased to represent the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), as platinum sponsor for the event. We highlighted RCSEd’s Global Surgery Foundation (GSF) and the work of FRRHH in supporting the development of global surgery and global health by facilitating a community of best practice.

In May, we journeyed to Killarney, Ireland for the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM) Conference.

We were excited to be exhibitors at this event which connected over 650 delegates from across 46 countries sharing experiences and best practice from around the world.

Attendees had the privilege of hearing thought-provoking presentations delivered by world renowned speakers, including FRRHH’s Executive Committee Member, Professor Tony Redmond OBE.

The Lake District was our next stop for the National Centre for Remote and Rural Medicine Conference hosted by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). The Faculty, had the opportunity to represent RCSEd as exhibitors at the conference which covered the theme of ‘Changing Practice, Changing Outcomes’.

Attendees were invited to hear inspiring presentations from speakers across the field of urgent, rural and digital medicine.

A remarkable moment at the Conference was the official signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between RCSEd and UCLan.

This partnership has offered medical students at UCLan access to a global community of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare experts.

Finally in July, we returned home to Edinburgh to support the Global Emergency Care Collaboration (GECCo) with an event on UK Global Health Projects, Programmes & Research: Who Does What In Emergency Care?

The event brought together emergency care practitioners from across the UK to participate in engaging discussions around global health projects.

Such discussions included the operations of UK-Med, the development of a robust emergency workforce in Uganda, and accessing quality injury care in LMICs.

FRRHH Celebrates Five Years

In November, the Faculty celebrated its five-year anniversary and to commemorate this occasion we ran a campaign throughout the month.

We reflected on our achievements over the past five years whilst acknowledging those who have been instrumental in the journey.

We interviewed members of our Executive Committee to share their thoughts on the past, present and future of FRRHH.

We also highlighted notable members of the Faculty who have contributed to the success of significant milestones throughout the years.

The world has witnessed some drastic changes over the last five years; with the outbreak of a global pandemic and tragic events creating war-torn countries and humanitarian crises.

The Faculty recognises the ever growing need for the advancement of accessible and quality healthcare and the importance of supporting and providing professional development for all who operate within the area of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare.

In this blog, we reflected on the ways in which the Faculty adapted to such changes and provided support to help with the furtherance of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare globally.

Launch of Membership and Fellowship Awards

Last year, we were proud to launch our first Membership and Fellowship Awards, which marked a significant achievment for the Faculty and the future of our community of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare professionals.

The Membership and Fellowship awards is a critical move towards the professional recognition of the unique skills, knowledge, and experience present in this diverse and vibrant healthcare community.
