Overview
David O’Regan has the pleasure of interviewing the new and incoming Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Mr Alex Phillips. Alex was shortlisted for the 2022 Silver Scalpel Award. We are going to explore his philosophies on surgical training and ask him to reflect on his abilities as an outstanding trainer. We will discuss the Framework of Standards of the FST. Alex will outline his vision of the future for FST.
Aims
This webinar aims to outline the attributes of a good trainer and how this aligns to the framework of FST Standards.

David O'Regan
Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers
Mr David O’Regan MBA MD BM FRCSEd (C-TH) FFSTEd, Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon for nineteen years and Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the RCSEd. Initiated the Black Belt Academy of Surgical Skills that teaches how to ‘hone surgical skills’ and has a global following of over 3160 in 47 counties.
Alex Phillips
The FST Surgical Director elect, Mr Alexander Phillips is a Consultant Oesophagogastric Surgeon, based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne. He has a background in medical education having completed a Master’s in Medical Education and followed this up with an MD exploring clinical and surgical learning. He has several medical education roles, including the director of undergraduate surgery at Newcastle University, and deputy Programme Director for General Surgery in the Northeast of England as well as serving as a FST Deputy Director from 2016 to 2021.
