RCSEd Dental Dean Responds to UK Government Update of Nutrient Profiling Model

Published: 27 January 2026

Responding to today’s update of the Nutrient Profiling Model that determines what are 'less healthy' foods and drinks by calculating the beneficial and less beneficial nutrients in these products, Professor Grant McIntyre, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery said:

"We are pleased the government has updated the Nutrient Profiling Model ending years of waiting for this valuable tool to be aligned with modern dietary advice."

“As the Model determines how food and drink products are classified, this update will better determine which foodstuffs are categorized as healthy or unhealthy. Sugar is the primary cause of tooth decay and given the growing levels of obesity across all parts of the UK, such changes will better inform the public of the food and drink they are consuming.”

"We look forward to working with the UK government as the model is rolled out.”
