Mr Toby Gillgrass Elected Vice Dean (International) of the Faculty of Dental Surgery

Published: 16 June 2026

The Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) is pleased to announce that Mr Toby Gillgrass has been elected as Vice Dean (International). This position, which supports the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, works alongside a fellow Vice Dean with responsibility for UK matters.

Mr Gillgrass is a Consultant Orthodontist, based in Glasgow at the Glasgow Dental Hospital and the Royal hospital for Children in Glasgow. He has been involved directly in cleft care now for over 20 years and is presently the Clinical Lead for the Cleft Surgical Service for Scotland and lead for the orthodontic Group for Cleft Care Scotland. Mr Gillgrass represents the Cleft Surgical service for Scotland on the Cleft Development Group (CDG); the orthodontic representative on the Quality Monitoring Improvement Committee (QMIC) for the UK and was formerly a member of the Craniofacial Council.

He has been Chair of the Specialty Advisory Board for Orthodontics for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) for Orthodontics for the General Dental Council and is presently a member of Dental Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was recently a recipient of a distinction award through the British Orthodontic Society and the Dental Faculty Medal through the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

I am honoured to have been elected to the position of Vice Dean (International). The Faculty’s international membership is growing year on year and I am pleased to take up this role supporting them. I look forward to working alongside our Dean Elect and the Vice Dean of the FDS and College team to uphold and promote the highest standards of examinations, education and accreditation internationally.

Toby Gillgrass

I am delighted that Mr Toby Gillgrass has been appointed as Vice Dean (International) Elect. Toby's long-standing experience examining and engaging internationally on behalf of the Faculty will serve him well in this role. I look forward to supporting him as he engages with our diverse international membership as he takes over from Mr Will McLaughlin who has served alongside me as Vice Dean, taking the Faculty’s international engagement to the next level.
