The International Postgraduate Deanery (IPD) has been hosting Induction Days for international trainees since 2019. Held twice a year, these two-day programmes provide valuable opportunities for trainees to build social networks within the medical field while gaining essential insights into working in the UK.

This March, we welcomed a new cohort of trainees at the Birmingham Regional Centre. The first day began with an introduction to the College by International Postgraduate Dean, Col. Paul Parker, followed by an engaging icebreaker activity—making balloon animals—which was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants.

The morning sessions continued with presentations on IPD Quality Assurance, NHS culture, an introduction to ISCP, and Quality Improvement (QI) and audit. We were also pleased to have our colleague Robin introduce the library services available to trainees.

In the afternoon, trainees explored professional standards within the NHS in greater depth. Ms Sandra McAllister delivered a session on expectations in professional practice, while Mr Chelliah Selvasekar discussed the relationship between trainees and their Assigned Educational Supervisors (AES). These sessions provided valuable clarity on the standards expected of doctors working in the UK. The day concluded with an insightful talk on teamwork and patient safety by Mr Kamal Aryal, who shared lessons from his own experience. A welcome dinner in Birmingham rounded off the day, offering trainees a chance to relax and connect further.

The second day began with a comprehensive session led by Mr Richard Steyn, an experienced Consultant Thoracic Surgeon, covering confidentiality, safeguarding, consent, and negligence. This session was particularly beneficial for trainees from non-English-speaking backgrounds who may not have previously encountered these foundational principles.

The programme concluded with a session from Ms Helene Hillier of the General Medical Council (GMC), who addressed common challenges faced by trainees and strategies to overcome them.

Overall, the induction was very well received, with trainees expressing how helpful and informative they found the programme. We look forward to welcoming the next cohort at the upcoming Induction in September.
