RCSEd President Responds to GMC Update on Discrimination and Inequality in Medicine

Published: 20 January 2026

Responding to the launch of the GMC's annual update on their work to tackle discrimination and inequality in medicine, Dr Clare McNaught, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh said:

"We acknowledge the update from the GMC and welcome the progress made to reduce disparities in employer referral rates based on ethnicity and site of primary medical qualification. We also note their efforts to address the ethnic diversity of their own employees, particularly at a senior level. Unfortunately, there remains a significant attainment gap for non-UK trainees across all measures of training, educational attainment, and career progression. We are committed to work with the GMC, NHS employers, and statuary education bodies to continue our campaign for a fairer NHS and a workplace culture that supports and values every member of our diverse NHS workforce."
