Fellowship Ad Hominem Awarded to Professor Elbarbary
We were delighted to present to Professor Mohamed Elbarbary the award of Fellowship Ad Hominem at our Diploma Ceremony on 4 September.
Professor Elbarbary is an internationally respected paediatric surgeon, academic leader and educator whose career has made a substantial contribution to paediatric surgery and surgical training in Egypt and beyond.
Following his medical and surgical training in Cairo, Professor Elbarbary spent time at the then Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, Glasgow, before progressing rapidly at Cairo University to become Professor and subsequently Chairman of the Department of General Surgery, one of Egypt’s largest academic surgical departments.
Over more than three decades, his clinical work has focused particularly on minimally invasive paediatric surgery, neonatal thoracoscopy and complex genital reconstruction. He pioneered thoracoscopic repair of congenital oesophageal atresia and diaphragmatic hernia in Egypt, achieving outcomes on a par with leading international centres. He also established minimally invasive programmes using innovative approaches despite limited resources, supported by philanthropic investment and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Professor Elbarbary is equally distinguished as an academic and teacher. He has supervised more than 150 postgraduate theses, has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers, has developed innovative simulation-based training, and has contributed internationally through lectures and live operative workshops.
As Chairman of the General Surgery Department at Cairo University, Professor Elbarbary led major reforms in undergraduate and postgraduate surgical education, introducing structured training, modern assessment and faculty development.
The RCSEd President and Council were honoured to welcome Professor Elbarbary as an Ad Hominem Fellow and look forward to strengthening ties in the years ahead.
