The Edinburgh Head and Neck Course - Module II (Head and Neck Reconstruction)
This course is delivered in two modules and run over five days. Module II covers head and neck reconstruction and runs over three days. For information on Module 1, please see here
Both modules are largely hands-on. Participants will work in pairs on Thiel cadavers with supervision from an expert consultant faculty, in a simulated environment. The modules can be booked as standalone, or if registering for both a discount is available. The course is aimed at trainees and newly appointed consultants in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Otolaryngology / ENT Surgery and Plastic Surgery. Both modules are heavily supported and sponsored by KLS Martin
Format
Trainees and newly appointed consultants in OMFS, ENT and Plastic Surgery
Relevant Grades: ST4, ST5, ST6, ST7, ST8, SpR, Consultant
Course Format
Brief lectures. Hands-on Cadaveric dissection using Thiel cadavers.
Course Objectives
This three-day course provides the underpinning knowledge base and practical instruction on head and neck surgery. Largely hands-on with participants working in pairs on Thiel cadavers with supervision from an expert consultant faculty.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module participants should be able to:
- Describe the surgical anatomy of commonly used free and pedicled flaps used in head and neck reconstruction.
- Analyse and list the options available for reconstruction of the head and neck to provide the best functional and aesthetic reconstruction.
- Perform, under supervision, commonly used pedicled and free flaps for head and neck reconstruction.
- Perform fixation of composite free flaps for reconstruction of specific defects in the head and neck.
- Describe the optimal reconstruction of defects of the head and neck using free flaps to provide the best functional and aesthetic result.
- Explain the need for rehabilitation following successful reconstruction and outline the techniques involved to achieve this.
