Overview
Course Overview
Led by a highly experienced faculty, this didactic two-day course will deliver the knowledge base and cover the practical skills required to deliver safe effective humanitarian orthopaedic and plastic surgery in low resource austere environments. Equipping the potential humanitarian surgeon with essential orthopaedic and plastic surgical techniques which might be outside their speciality or field of practice in their own country.
Target Audience
Those in any specialty wishing to undertake humanitarian surgery in the global environment ST6+, SAS Grades and Consultants (GS, Plas, T+O, Neuro, ENT)
Learning Style
Short lectures, extensive hands-on practical sessions
Learning Outcomes
After attending this two-day course, you will:
i) Perform and safely manage 90% of all those presenting for debridement, splintage, external fixation, plastering, wound care, skin flaps (basic and complex), amputation after (often delayed) trauma.
ii) Describe the protocols for treatment of orthoplastic injury in the austere / resource deprived environment.
iii) Understand the rewards of humanitarian surgery - often in disaster, conflict or remote areas of the world.

Additional Information
The Course offers the opportunity of learning from senior faculty with recent experience in Mali, Gaza, Turkey, Malawi, Afghanistan and the Balkans.
