In light of The Food (Promotion and Presentation) (Wales) Regulations 2025 coming into force today, whereby medium and large businesses are restricted from the marketing of High Fat, Salt and Sugar (HFSS) food and drinks at key locations such as checkouts and aisle ends, Professor Grant McIntyre, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery said:
‘We are pleased to see the Price and Promotion Regulations coming into force in Wales today.’
‘Obesity is a serious cause of concern in Wales, with over 60% of adults being classified as having obesity or overweight. It is also deeply concerning that around 25% of children in Wales are classified as such before even starting school. To give children the best chance of a healthy lifestyle and avoid chronic illness it is imperative to reduce instances of obesity.’
‘We do not believe that these regulations, in isolation, are the solution to reducing obesity in Wales, however they are a start and should be used in conjunction with other measures such as production reformulation and levies on HFSS foods and drinks.’
