Responding to research into sexual misconduct in dentistry published by the General Dental Council (GDC), Professor Grant McIntyre, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh said:
“The GDC’s research is yet another shocking insight into the prevalence of sexual misconduct in dentistry and its far-reaching consequences for victims. The report shows how sexual misconduct has been significantly under-reported as victims are reluctant to report for a variety of reasons such as unclear reporting mechanisms, fear of retaliation and lack of trust in administrative support.
“Sexual misconduct is unacceptable in any context. Everyone should feel safe and respected in dentistry, so all of us in the profession have a responsibility to ensure patients and staff have a safe and supportive environment. It is also vital that those who are subject to, or have concerns of sexual misconduct, are supported and protected.
“Our #letsremoveit campaign is designed to raise awareness of Sexual Harassment and encourage zero tolerance of sexual misconduct in healthcare. We have produced a wealth of online guidance for individuals and bystanders affected by sexual misconduct as well as Healthcare Organisations.
“We will continue to work across our profession to reduce this unacceptable problem.”
