RCSEd President Prof Clare McNaught named Honorary Chair of the University of Aberdeen

Prof Clare McNaught, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), has been appointed as an Honorary Chair at the University of Aberdeen.

A graduate of the University of Aberdeen, the appointment recognised Prof McNaught's significant contributions to the surgical profession and her dedication to education and training.

Originally from Glasgow, Prof McNaught has held several positions in the NHS, and currently works as a Consultant General Surgeon at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. Clare also made history in 2025 by becoming the first female President in RCSEd's 520-year history.

Throughout her career, Clare has been a dedicated educator and has held several key roles within the College, including Vice President, examiner, Regional Surgical Ambassador for Yorkshire, Surgeons’ News Editor, and Founder and Chair of the Younger Fellows’ Committee.

Prof Clare McNaught said: “It is a tremendous honour to have been appointed as Honorary Chair at the University of Aberdeen, an institution that played such a formative role in my own career. I am deeply grateful for this recognition and excited by the opportunity to contribute to the university's community.

“This role allows me to further my lifelong commitment to surgical education and to strengthen the ties between the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and one of Scotland’s most respected universities. I look forward to helping inspire the next generation of medical professionals."
