College of Surgeons Malaysia (CSAMM) Annual Scientific Congress 2026

RCSEd Vice President, Professor Angus Watson, was honoured as the 52nd A.M. Ismail Orator at the June 2026 College of Surgeons Malaysia (CSAMM) Annual Scientific Congress, delivering a lecture entitled “What Kind of Surgeon is Needed for Conflict and Rural Surgery” which drew on his own experiences as a surgeon working in austere environments.

A particularly meaningful aspect of the occasion was the discovery within the College archives of Professor A.M. Ismail’s (known as Coco Majid) original examination records, including his petition and admission documents dating back to 1955. The handwritten records provided a tangible connection to one of Malaysia’s most distinguished surgical figures and highlighted the College’s longstanding relationship with the country’s surgical community.

Professor Watson was privileged to present during the Opening Ceremony a Five-Year Commemorative Report on the Tuanku Muhriz Travelling Fellowship in Rural Surgery to His Royal Highness Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir. The publication celebrates five years of the Fellowship programme and recognises the enduring support of His Royal Highness, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, the Ministry of Health Malaysia and Malaysian benefactors.

The Congress programme further showcased RCSEd expertise through faculty contributions: President Professor Clare-Ellen McNaught delivered a pre-recorded presentation entitled “Burn Out: Inevitable or Preventable” for the Sustaining Professionalism in Modern Surgery Symposium, and Professor Watson shared his extensive experiences in conflict zones during the Women Surgeons Symposium with a presentation entitled “Navigating the Ethics of Surgical Volunteerism in Conflict Zones – My Gaza Experience”.
