Ronnie completed all his surgical training in the UK, including Basic Surgical Training, clinical research leading to an MD, and Higher Surgical Training. Following his CCT award and Specialist Registration in the UK, he undertook multiple international fellowships in Colorectal Surgery, including in Singapore, South Korea, and Switzerland. He then took up the post of Consultant in General Surgery with a Colorectal Subspecialty interest at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Following an invitation from Singapore General Hospital (SGH), he relocated to Singapore to take up the post of Consultant in Colorectal Surgery at SGH. He later became a Senior Consultant and held academic positions as an Assistant Professor at both the National University of Singapore and the Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore. In March 2024, he left SGH to become the Director of Colorectal Care Specialists, Singapore.
In 2015, he received the prestigious ‘British Traveling Fellow to the USA’ award from the Association of Coloproctology Great Britain Ireland (ACPGBI) and the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), in collaboration with the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). As part of this award, he completed fellowships at two premier colorectal units, the Cleveland Clinic Florida and the University of California, Irvine. He is passionate about training and strongly believes in the value of well-trained future surgeons. In recognition of his training, he was awarded the inaugural ‘International Trainer of the Year’ award from ACPGBI in 2021. To date, he is the sole recipient of this award outside the UK.
Ronnie has a strong interest in clinical and MedTech innovation. He has received several awards, including the ‘Top 10 Most Impactful Healthcare Projects’ award at the Singapore National Health IT summit in 2018 for a project led Ronnie: ‘Artificial Intelligence in Colorectal Cancer’. He has also received multiple grants for medical device innovations. He has authored multiple scientific publications, including in Nature, The Lancet, and Annals of Surgery. He remains committed to clinical excellence and to delivering patient-centric, high-quality healthcare.
He cares deeply about giving back to the surgical society, serving as its voice, and upholding the highest professional standards within the surgical community. With this in mind, he feels extremely privileged and humbled to accept the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s appointment as International Surgical Ambassador for Singapore.
Ronnie has maintained a strong bond and loyalty to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) for over 25 years. RCSEd is the oldest and most prestigious surgical college in the world. Since its founding over five centuries ago, RCSEd has remained at the forefront of surgical standards, training, accreditation, and excellence. He is very proud and honoured to represent RCSEd and the surgical community in Singapore.
