Overview

The third webinar in this monthly series developed in collaboration with ASGBI and The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh General Surgery SSB and Trainee Committee. The purpose is to support those preparing for the General Surgery FRCS exam. The focus of this webinar is to provide an overview of the fundamental principles of perioperative nutrition with a focus on nutrition in emergency general surgery patients, particularly those with complex conditions and post-operative complications. The discussion will explore indications, evidence base and risks and benefits of different types of nutritional support.

Aims

Enable trainees to assess and manage perioperative nutrition including recognise indications and complications of nutritional support in the emergency general surgical patients.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar the participant should be able to:

  • Understand and recognise key principes of nutritional support in perioperative patients
  • Assess the nutritional needs of patients with complex gastro-intestinal pathology especially those with bowel obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease and short bowel syndrome
  • Explore and discuss the indications and evidence base for various types of nutritional support
  • Consider the risks and benefits associated with different forms of nutritional support
  • Apply knowledge to clinical cases
  • Describe the multidisciplinary approach to nutrition.
