Speakers

Dr Ewen McColl

Dr Ewen McColl is a GDC Registered Specialist in Endodontics,Periodontics, Restorative Dentistry at Peninsula Dental School, University of Plymouth.

Ewen qualified with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Edinburgh in 1993 and joined the British Army as a Dental Officer in 1995. During his military career he served as Senior Dental Officer in Afghanistan and for 2 years on Loan Service to The Sultan of Brunei’s Armed Forces. After 6 years of General Dental Practice experience in the military he undertook three years of Specialist Training in Periodontology at The Eastman Dental Hospital in London, passing MClinDent with distinction. Following this he completed 3 years of training at Guy’s Dental Hospital in order to become an accredited Restorative Consultant(2009). 

He took up his current position in Peninsula Dental School in September 2012, where he is Director of Clinical Dentistry and Deputy Head of School. He has been an RCSEd MFDS examiner for over a decade and former RCSEd regional advisor (SW England).

 

Dr Gerry McKenna

Dr Gerry McKenna is a senior Lecturer / Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Queen's University in Belfast. He qualified in Newcastle in 2004 and after a number of hospital posts in Edinburgh and Dundee, he completed specialist training and a PhD in University College Cork in 2013.

Gerry is a principal investigator in the Centre for Public Health in Queen's University Belfast where he leads oral health research.  His main clinical and research interests centre around optimising the oral health of older patients and his work is supported by significant grant income from the National Institute for Healthcare Research (NIHR), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Dunhill Medical Trust. 

Gerry is the current president of the Geriatric Oral Research Group (GORG) within the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and he is the past-president of both the European College of Gerodontology and the Irish Division of IADR.  Gerry has published widely in the scientific literature and his research has been rewarded with a number of prizes including the IADR Hatton Award, the ECG Research Award and the IADR GORG J Morita Award. 

Gerry was a member of the Oral Health Policy group for the Republic of Ireland which developed the new National Oral Health Policy in 2019.  He is an adjunct Professor in University College Cork whilst also serving as Associate Editor of Gerodontology and as a member of the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Dentistry and Evidence Based Dentistry.
