The Shanghai Travelling Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery provides up to £4000 of funding to support one individual attend a four week Fellowship experience at the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Science, 9th Peoples Hospital, Shanghai.
Applicants should be Specialty Trainees, SAS Doctors or Consultants in the first two years of their appointment, who are Members or Fellows of RCSEd. Those based in the UK or Internationally are eligible to apply.
This fellowship has been an immensely valuable experience and provided benefits that I think will persist throughout my career. Over the course of 6 weeks I was involved in excess of 50 major cases with free flaps … This compares with perhaps 35 major cases per year back home. The range included the full extent of maxillofacial resections – mandible, maxilla, all oral sites, orbit and nose. Reconstruction comprised of ALT, radial forearm, fibula, DCIA, pectoralis major, coronoid process and other local flaps. Overall, given this range and volume of cases, I inevitably learned a huge amount and picked up a great many tips and techniques to take back and apply and pass on to colleagues.
