The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has recently appointed Dr Carole Ann Boyle as Dental Editor of Surgeons' News, the award-winning magazine for our surgical, dental and allied healthcare professional membership.

Her interests include providing care under General Anaesthesia, teaching undergraduates and postgraduates sedation and SCD. Carole has a significant involvement in training, having been Training Programme Director in London and now chairs the Speciality Advisory Committee for SCD and the examination board for the Tricollegiate Membership in SCD. Carole's involvement with the RCSEd began in 1994 when she passed primary FDS, followed by the Membership in Special Needs Dentistry in 1999, the FDS 2016 and in 2017 she became a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers. She was elected to Dental Council in 2017.

Surgeon's News Editor, Mr Roger Currie said:

" I'm delighted with the appointment of Dr Boyle as the Dental Editor of Surgeons' News, her wide clinical, College and specialty association experience will enhance the dental content of Surgeons' News over future issues. On a personal level I very much look forward to working with Carole, the in-house team and our publishers, to develop the dental section."

We spoke with Carole and learned more about her new role and the editorial experience she brings.

We are delighted that you will be joining our Surgeons’ News editorial team. Can you tell us what motivated you to apply for this role and what experience you will bring to your new position?

"Writing has always been my interest - if I hadn’t done dentistry I had a place to study for a MA in English and History. I enjoy reading Surgeons' News and am keen to increase its appeal to dental readers with content which will engage our members, fellows and associates wherever they practice: primary care, specialist practice and in hospital settings. Increasing awareness of the work of Dental Council, examinations and education committees is important to ensure the whole team feel there is something for them. Surgeons’ News is a magazine so less clinically focused content is also important.

My experience is varied: I have authored over 30 scientific papers, book chapters and am joint editor of the standard text book for dental conscious sedation. During my time as President of SAAD  (Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry) I wrote an editorial welcome for the journal and news letter."

What topics are you planning to cover in the next edition of Surgeon’s News?

"The themes for Surgeons news are decided in advance so the dental section will fit with those themes and will influence them. The Dental Faculty has a new Dean Phil Taylor with ambitious manifesto – I see the role of the dental editor is to help him achieve those goals. Outside of dentistry I am particularly interested in wine, having just completing a diploma in wine so hope to bring a dental element to the wine column in the future."

Surgeons' News is an eclectic combination of the latest news, views, and lifestyle, making an engaging and informative read for our membership. You can access the current and back issues of our magazine here
