RCSEd is indebted to Mrs Valerie Dundas and PATCH in their help and generosity in establishing this opportunity, in honour of Dr Charle ‘Bertie’ Dundas.
Following the award, I completed a HealthTech Fellowship at Harvard Medical School which meant undertaking a 10 month immersion in Biodesign method, based at Mass General Brigham. My team created a novel method to support personalised analgesia for patients at the end of their lives, using an opioid-eluting patch technology. I am only one of two UK graduates of the course. SPOT, the invention that was awarded the Dundas Medal, alongside my team of Prof Jacob George, Dr Deans Buchanan and Dr Scott Jamieson, addresses an ongoing and pressing need to support prescribers when prescribing opioids for patients at the end of their lives. We are now actively working to make SPOT available to prescribers in Scotland and beyond.
