The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is an independent membership organisation dedicated to the education, training and assessment of Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and Doctors who are involved in the surgical care of patients.  Founded in 1505, the College currently has a membership of 30,000+ in over 100 countries throughout the world.

The College operates from a unique estate in Edinburgh. Located on Nicolson Street, this includes the A-Listed Playfair building, as well as B-listed buildings, Surgeons’ Hall Museum, medical skills labs, events spaces, as well as commercial, leased, residential and office spaces.

About the Role

A unique opportunity has arisen to join the College in a new Head of Estates role. In this role you will lead the Property Department, developing teams to achieve a high standard of service across a range of functions including maintenance, housekeeping, health & safety, security, and reception. You will play a strategic role defining and delivering a Property Strategy in liaison with key stakeholders ensuring the effective management and use of buildings across this diverse estate. As a head of department, you will work collaboratively with colleagues across the College to support and achieve institutional priorities.

Additionally, the College is in the early stages of considering a masterplan project centered around the A-Listed Playfair Building which turns 200 in 2032. You will be key to informing and enabling this project driving development and investment to ensure the estate continues to be an inspiring place for people to thrive for the next 200 years.

Experience/Qualifications/Key Skills

This is a unique opportunity for an individual experienced in strong leadership with proven abilities to achieve cultural change and inspire multi-disciplinary teams. As the successful candidate, you will have expertise managing diverse property portfolios with a comprehensive understanding of building projects, maintenance programmes, and compliance frameworks. You will have the ability to prioritise your workload with minimum supervision You will possess strong financial acumen, coupled with experience in developing contracts and managing budgets. Your qualifications will include formal training in facilities or property management, health & safety, and a thorough understanding of relevant legislation.

Your personal qualities will include the ability to influence and engage stakeholders effectively, balance analytical rigour with innovative thinking. Excellent communication skills and a commitment to the values of the College are paramount. A high level of professionalism and diplomacy is required for the role as is a willingness to take on new challenges and be receptive to change.
