What makes a good trainer? - The trainee view Part 2

If you want to identify a good trainer or want some advice on how to become a good trainer, it is best asking the trainees. The Faculty of Surgical Trainers asked the trainees in a webinar on 19 January 2021 – the feedback was incredibly positive and left many questions unanswered. Please listen to the recorded webinar. David has a Masters degree in Surgical Education from Imperial College, and was recently awarded a PhD from the University of Manchester. He has extensive teaching experience in the UK and Uganda, and continues to teach undergraduates and postgraduates in the north west. He led the successful application to HMRC to allow tax exemption for the FRCS exam, is heavily involved in the College’s anti-bullying campaign, and recently designed the RCSEd Affiliate Fellowship Programme.


Haroon Rehman

Elected as the Trainee Representative on College Council, Haroon is a Specialty Registrar (ST8) in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he sits on the department’s clinical governance and training committees. Haroon has a special. Interest in patient safety, teaching and training and is a trainee lead for NHS Grampian.


Jonathan Wareing

Academic Foundation Doctor in Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery. Originally trained in dentistry, Jonathan decided to pursue a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery and graduated from Leeds medical school in 2018. Jonathan joined the Trainee Committee as a co-opted member in April 2019 and is involved with the college in the areas of sustainability of surgery and education. He is currently undertaking a PG cert in medical education and is very passionate about changing the culture in the medical and dental field so that is an open environment for everyone.


Kellie Bateman

Kellie Bateman is a ST4 General Surgery Registrar currently based in Swansea, Wales. She is an enthusiastic member of the RCSEd Trainee Committee and is passionate about improving surgical training and junior doctor wellbeing.
