Research Committee

The Research Committee leads on surgical research development at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), overseeing fellowships, grants and bursaries. It governs funding decisions, promotes research culture, supports career development and partners with external bodies to create impactful opportunities for surgeons and dental professionals.

Awards Committee

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) Awards Committee recognises the exceptional achievements of surgeons and dental professionals worldwide. It governs the awarding of College medals, honours and prizes, highlighting excellence in clinical practice, research, education and contributions to College life.

Research Fellowships

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) disburses training and research fellowships to promote surgical and dental innovation. These fellowships support Members and Fellows undertaking academic research and advancing clinical knowledge, often in collaboration with global donors and organisations.

Travelling Fellowships

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) provides travelling fellowships that enable surgeons and dental professionals to expand their expertise through international placements, skills exchange and immersive educational opportunities across diverse clinical settings.

Grants

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) disburses annual grants to fund surgical and dental research, educational development and non-research medical projects. Awards are peer-reviewed and overseen by the Research Committee.

Scholarships

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) disburses two donor-supported scholarships each year to assist Members and Fellows in furthering their surgical or dental education and training.

Bursaries

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) disburses several bursaries annually to fund undergraduate travel and commemorate important national and global milestones in surgical and dental education.

Prizes

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) prizes celebrate exam excellence and career success of Members and Fellows, with many awarded alongside COSECSA, College Office Bearers and specialty exam teams.

Professorships

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) professorships honour outstanding Members and Fellows whose contributions to surgical or dental research and clinical practice are of exceptional national or international significance.

Lectureships

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) lectureships honour Members and Fellows through invited talks that highlight major contributions to surgical and dental advancement, delivered at leading events and conferences.

National Clinical Impact Awards

The 2025 National Clinical Impact Awards (NCIA) application period is now closed. The deadline was Tuesday 27 May. The College are encouraging applications from Fellows and Members of RCSEd in Good Standing in England and Wales. The awards are open to NHS consultant doctors, dentists, on an NHS consultant or academic contract and who are registered on the GMC or GDC specialist list.

Triennial and ICOSET Conference 2025

The RCSEd Triennial and ICOSET Conference took place from 4-6 June 2025. The event brought together global surgical leaders in Edinburgh for an unmissable conference focused on innovation, education and collaboration. Attendees earned CPD points and had the opportunity to network with leading professionals.
