Travelling Fellowships

The Tuanku Muhriz Fellowship in rural surgery aims to provide one awardee with the opportunity to gain further experience and training in rural surgery in Malaysia. 

Applications should either be: 

• Surgeons who are Higher Surgical Trainees who have not yet attained Consultant grade.
• Trainee General Surgeons, around the time of their appointment to a Consultant post, to enable them to study in centres with particular expertise relating to the rural surgery;
• Surgeons making short visits to learn new surgical techniques, or to work in centres developing a rural surgery service.

All applications must be based, or have trained, in the UK.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is pleased to offer the Malaysia-United Kingdom Travelling Fellowship to junior or senior registrars in the Malaysian Training system (e.g. Medical Officer, MO Level to Masters in Surgery programme candidates) who are Members or Fellows of the college in good standing.

The Fellowship is a four-six week observership programme in any branch of Surgery within a UK hospital. The successful applicant will gain experience in evidence-based practice of the NHS, benefits of multidisciplinary team (MDT) working, teamwork and communication skills across the breadth of the healthcare profession, clinical practice supported by research, and collaborative working in research and audit projects.

The fellowship provides up to £2500 in funding for travel from Malaysia to centres in the UK for applicants who aim to gain a different training experience, and develop new connections and networks within the global medial community.

The successful candidate will be generously hosted at the Dr.Jeyasekharan Hospital in Nagercoil, South India, for a period of 4 – 6 weeks, to experience working within a rural and tropical context and within a MDT. Travel to Nagercoil will also be supported up to the value of £2000.

Applications are welcome from UK and International Members and Fellows, and from the larger healthcare workforce, including physician associates and nurses. Those able to demonstrate a special interest or experience in tropical surgery and/or medicine will be given special consideration.

The College is pleased to invite applicants who are FRCS (Intercollegiate) trainees, Consultants up to two years post appointment, and SAS doctors to apply for the RCSEd- Shanghai Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery Fellowship. Applications are welcomed from UK and International Members and Fellows.  

The Fellowship is a four-six week placement at Shanghai Ninth Peoples Hospital of Shanghai Jiatong University, which is the leading centre in China in its field. The department has been ranked no. 1 in plastic surgery in China for 13 consecutive years and consists of several divisions: The Division of Lymphology, The Division of Vascular Anomalies, The Division of Burn Surgery, The Division of Hand Surgery, The Division of Aesthetic Surgery, The Division of Re-constructive Surgery. 

Up to £4000 may be awarded to assist with travel expenses.

The Fellowship provides funding of £4000 to support a four-six week experience in the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Science, School of Stomatology and the Cranial Base Unit both at 9th Peoples Hospital.

The Fellowship is a four-six week placement in the prestigious Department of Thoracic Surgery, National Centre for Respiratory Diseases, First Affiliated Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

The Fellowship provides funding of £4000 to support a four-six week experience in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, National Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, 17 South Panjiayuan, Chaoyang District, Beijing under the supervision of Professor Li Yin. The centre is world renowned and has gained widespread recognition as a leader in Enhanced Recovery after surgery through the employment of a non-tube-no fasting approach.

RCSEd is honoured to announce that applications are open for the new Professor Subhash Khanna Travelling Observership in Robotic Surgery.

The observership offers one successful applicant a unique opportunity to spend four weeks at the Swagat Super Speciality Hospital and Surgical Institute, learning from world-renowned robotic surgeon Professor Subhash Khanna. During this time, the participant will engage in simulator training, observe robotic surgeries, and gain valuable insights by shadowing Professor Khanna in his clinical practice. To support the successful applicant, funding of up to £2,000 will be available to assist with travel and accommodation expenses.

Applications are welcome from UK and International Members and Fellows of RCSEd, who are ST6 or above. Young Consultants (within 5 years of appointment) will also be considered.

This funding opportunity was established by Lady Fraser in honour of her husband, Sir James Fraser, to provide funding for Higher Surgical Trainees in General surgery to pursues further professional development experiences or training.

The Ethicon Foundation Fund Travel Grant provides a contribution of up to £1000 towards international travel costs to further enhance a speciality skill or experience which is not available in the applicant’s own region. The fellowship should take place over a six week to 12-month period. 

Applications are welcome from Members and Fellows in training grade appointments from the UK and abroad. LEDs and SAS doctors are not eligible to apply.
