FDT Annual Meeting 2021 – Using simulation for dental training during the COVID-19 Pandemic

This webinar will begin with an introduction and an update for the FDT membership from the Director on the activities of the Faculty. This will be followed by a presentation from the University of Leeds on their experience with training during the COVID-19 Pandemic using the Simodont Dental Trainer to prepare their dental students to return to treating patients and to support clinical teaching. There will follow a panel discussion exploring the benefits and disadvantages of simulation training and how the use of haptics could develop in dental education and training. Participants will be welcomed to join in the panel discussion.
This session aims to:
- Inform participants about the activities of the Faculty of Dental Trainers and their new tools for assessing human factors during dental training.
- Describe the experience of a dental school with providing training using a dental simulator to prepare students for treating patients.
- Explore the role of haptics in dental training taking into account human factors and communication skills.

Our panellists include:
Sarah Manton (Chair)
Sarah Manton is Director of the Faculty of Dental Trainers and the former Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. She is a Specialist in Restorative, Periodontics and Special Care Dentistry and is currently working in specialist practice.
Vicki Yorke is the Associate Director of Student Education for Clinical Programmes at the University of Leeds School of Dentistry.
Jane is Director of Student Education at the School of Dentistry, University of Leeds. She is a Clinical Associate Professor in Dental Education and has a particular interest in curriculum design and the education of professionalism, leadership and management, as well as clinical education and assessment.
Vince is Dean of the School of Dentistry at Liverpool University. He is a Professor and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry with a particular interest in Periodontology and sits on the Executive Committee of the FDT.
Jason is Associate Post-Graduate Dental Dean at Health Education England working across Yorkshire and the Humber.
Will is Associate Dean for Dental Core Training and Dental Specialty Training at Health Education and Improvement Wales and sits on the Executive Committee of the FDT.
