Standing on the Shoulders of Giants – an RCSEd MFDS Update by Dr Shan Gandhi

Published: 26 January 2026

The phrase 'standing on the shoulders of giants' was first documented in the 12th century by Bernard of Chartres. This powerful metaphor describes progress built upon the wisdom, discoveries and knowledge of those before us. In philosophy of science, Sir Issac Newton echoed this sentiment, recognising that his own discoveries were only made possible owing to the past work of predecessors and ‘giants’ of their time. The phrase resonates in modern culture, gracing the title and the cover of Oasis’s fourth album. Meanwhile, it can be seen literally encircling the edge of the technology two-pound coin – a symbol of continual investment.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh MFDS (Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery) team continues to embrace the themes and the spirit of building on the work of our previous ‘giants’. Over the last year, there has been a resurgence in Part 2 candidates. This success has been built on our history of forged relationships and our reputation as the ‘friendly’ College. The achievements made are a testament to the hard work, support and commitment of the staff who make our examinations possible. The dental examinations team, led by Jane Wheelhouse, consistently demonstrates agility and professionalism. The ability to run each exam so smoothly, considering the unexpected curveball scenarios which come their way is truly commendable.

We are honoured to have a diverse and dedicated team of national and international MFDS examiners, whose wealth in expertise covers primary, secondary or tertiary care settings. They work collaboratively supporting all aspects of the examination process to maintain the integrity of the examination. The dedication in countless hours and support is inspiring and infectious. The consistent focus to serve our candidates with the utmost respect and professionalism – a gold standard!

Our MFDS advisory board has recently evolved. Dr Liz Connor (Chair) and Dr Sarah Manton (Deputy Chair) had until recently, expertly guided the MFDS examination, navigating it and developing it with command. With strong stewardship, our reputation continued to grow and the links with our partners across the globe had been reinforced.  Their tenures, as well as that of Mr Stephen Adair (Board member) have sadly drawn to a close. As we look to the future, we congratulate Mr Chetan Kaitre (Deputy Chair), and Mr Aman Ulhaq (Board member) in their successful election – they have seamlessly stepped into giant shoes in ensuring that the previous ascending trajectory remains.

Our reach extends far beyond local borders. In 2025 we continued to attract candidates nationally and internationally, from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, aligned in their aspiration to attain the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh MFDS credentials. The MFDS examination continues to inspire as it is acknowledged as a pivotal stepping stone in dental career progression. We held MFDS examinations in London, Edinburgh, Cairo and Kuala Lumpur, and in 2026, we shall continue to strengthen our ties.

The success of MFDS would not be possible without the investments made by our members and fellows. Over the past year, Dr Carolin Graham led an inspiring ‘MFDS Update’ webinar, alongside Dr Mark Tawadrous (Cairo) and Dr Surein Jeya Ramen (Malaysia). Faculty presence at the IDEX conference (Cairo) led by Mr Will Mclaughlin, enhanced our visibility. The 'Catapult your career with MFDS' presentation was warmly received, where I was joined online with Dr Mark Tawadrous and Dr Ghada Tahoun. Personal experiences were shared, including how investment to attain the MFDS qualification had been key in shaping each career.

Changes to the MFDS Examination

The hearts and minds of The Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Surgeons of England and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow have recently been brought together, bringing changes to the MFDS examination.  It will soon become a unified single tri-collegiate examination, with assessment at a higher level (at the level of completing the third year of Dental Core Training, which is the equivalent of four years of postgraduate training).  It will also serve as an entry requirement for dental speciality fellowship examinations. The ongoing contributions by our team, to both the current bi-collegiate MFDS and the forthcoming tri-collegiate MFDS examinations are appreciated, especially during this period of transition.  For details about run-in and run-out timelines and further updates, please refer to the Dental Specialty Fellowship Examinations website. In-house updates will follow.

In November last year I had the privilege of examining in the breathtaking Playfair room of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Its 19th century architecture is simply magnificent, featuring a glass cupola ceiling, a circular balcony, a sweeping staircase, stained glass murals, all creating an atmosphere imbued with history and inspiration.  There are portraits of past luminaries who we can admire, with the likes of Lister, James Young Simpson and Elsie Inglis gracing the walls of the College.  Framed in lead, the etched stained-glass murals are visually striking with shimmers of reflections of past achievements scribed onto the footings of each stair. With each ascending step, the candidates make their mark and create their stamp, they are the ones now in the light as they aim to shine bright. It is an honour to be part of their journey, with each step of those who they follow, it is they who are the giants of tomorrow.
