The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has announced a new partnership with Orthopaedic Research UK (ORUK) to support trainees looking to develop their orthopaedic research skills.

The partnership will see both medical bodies match-fund two individuals to undertake a year-long research fellowship in orthopaedics, at a cost of £60,000 each.

The successful applicants will be chosen in September 2021 with a view to commencing their research fellowships from June 2022.

Professor Michael Griffin OBE, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, said:

“We are delighted to partner with ORUK in order to support the next generation of orthopaedic researchers.”

“RCSEd is one of the biggest surgical research funders, and this is a great example of an initiative that can benefit patients with musculoskeletal issues while also supporting the next generation of researchers who endeavour to make important breakthoughs in this field.”

Dr Arash Angadji, CEO of Orthopaedic Research UK, added:

“As one of the few registered charities devoted to addressing the most important gaps in research funding and professional education in bone, joint and muscle wellbeing, we are all too aware of the importance of these research fellowships with one of the world’s most prestigious medical institutions.

“Orthopaedic issues are ever worsening, with 19 million people in the UK suffering from musculoskeletal problems, at a cost to the NHS of £5bn per year.  The number of people on waiting lists is now so much greater than the capacity available to treat.  This is neither a sustainable nor a satisfactory state of affairs.  It demands a fundamentally different approach in which orthopaedic research will play a critical role.”
