RCSEd Responds to Dental Charges Policy

« View all Press Statements

In response to news that the Scottish Government will be scrapping dental charges for young adults aged between 18 and 25 from the end of August 2021, Professor Philip Taylor, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, said: “We are very supportive of the Scottish Government’s decision to provide free NHS dental care for young Scots up to the age of 25.

“Young people in Scotland should not have to worry about covering dental costs, especially at a time when they have been disproportionally economically effected by the pandemic. It will be interesting to see what impact this policy has on the oral health of this age group.

“Aneurin Bevan led the establishment of the NHS in order to provide medical care that is free at point-of-need to all, regardless of wealth. This is a very important step towards ensuring this principle applies to dentistry and we would love to see this measure being brought in for all parts of the UK.”
