Introduction to Surgical Training

Overview
This webinar series aims to guide attendees through the application process for the surgical training. Over the course of 7 webinars we will cover different aspects of the surgical portfolio from audits to teaching and getting theatre experience, as well as postgraduate exams and interviews. This series is aimed at foundation doctors and senior medical students.
Participants who attend all 7 webinars in this series will be offered free Affiliate Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Please see below for more details.
Aims
This webinar series aims to introduce attendees to the components of the surgical training application and how applicants can achieve the points allocated for each.
Learning Objectives
- To introduce medical students and foundation doctors to elements of the core surgical training application
- To inform future applicants on how to achieve points available for different aspects of the surgical training application
Panellists
Our panellists include:
- Professor Rowan Parks - President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Rowan is a Consultant HPB Surgeon and Professor of Surgical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. Serving on the Council since 2009, he has been on numerous College committees and short life working groups. He organised the RCSEd Triennial Meeting in 2018, the annual President's Meetings held from 2013-2015, and the Lister Centenary Meeting in 2012. He has a significant interest in medical education and training. Professor Parks is the past Deputy Medical Director of NHS Education for Scotland and also past-President of both the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) and the Great Britain and Ireland Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (GBIHPBA).
- Ms Aya Riad - Aya is a final year medical student at the University of Edinburgh and an incoming Academic Foundation Doctor at Imperial College London, focusing on Surgery & Innovation. She is an affiliate member of the RCSEd Trainees Committee, Student Lead of the STARSurg Research Collaborative and President of Academic Training in Undergraduate Medicine (ATRIUM) Edinburgh. She was the Convenor of the Medical Students Council and President of Edinburgh Student Surgical Society. Aya has a keen interest in academic surgery, particularly global and cancer surgery, and is passionate about increasing diversity in surgery and academia and the importance of mentorship, having founded the Edinburgh Surgical Mentorship Programme.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh would like to offer free Affiliate Membership to all participants who attend for the full 7 webinars in this series. Participants who attend all 7 sessions will receive an email within 2 weeks of the final webinar with details on how to access their free membership.
