Dear Fellows and Members,

We write to you from the Joint Surgical Royal Colleges to confirm the appointment of Mr Michael Lewis as Chair of the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE).

Mr Lewis, a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon based in Brighton, was appointed following a rigorous, transparent and competitive intercollegiate selection process, during which we considered applications from outstanding candidates across our profession.

Mr Lewis was part of a shortlist who we personally interviewed and was found to be the best candidate, largely owing to the expertise gained through his role as an examiner for the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in Cardiothoracic Surgery since 2012, his position as Board Chair between 2016 and 2019, and experience as Lead for the JSCFE in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Students and trainees have had a particularly difficult time during the pandemic, when not only has their training been interrupted, but they have been expected to take on duties outside their field, often under very challenging circumstances. Our goal now is to stabilise their training as much as possible, with examinations forming a crucial part of this.

We are confident that Mr Lewis will guide this process with integrity and dedication. We are delighted to welcome him as Chair and look forward to him taking up the post in January 2023.

 Yours sincerely,
