The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is excited to announce the launching of its MRCS examination in ophthalmology.

The College will introduce the new examination in early 2022 with plans to launch a Fellowship examination in the latter half of next year.

The introduction of the MRCS Ophthalmology course follows the natural conclusion of a partnership between RCSEd and the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), which saw those who passed the ICO examinations offered College membership and the use of its post-nominals.

Professor Michael Griffin OBE, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, said:

“We would like to thank the ICO for the very positive relationship we have enjoyed over the last few years and wish them the best in their pursuit of improving standards in global Ophthalmology care.

“We are delighted to now have the opportunity to launch our very own MRCS Ophthalmology and look forward to adding a Fellowship examination next year, ensuring those in the profession will have a continued route into College membership.”

RCSEd will continue to honour our commitment to offer membership of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to those candidates passing the three ICO assessments (Visual Sciences; Optics, Refraction & Instruments; and Clinical Ophthalmology) until the most recent April diet, when this agreement will end.

Furthermore, this group and all existing College Members in good standing can continue to enjoy the full benefits and services the College has to offer.

Further detail regarding the exam structure will be released in due course but in the meantime, any questions can be sent to ophthalmology.exams@rcsed.ac.uk.
