Research and Grants Scoring Panel Membership Opportunity

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is seeking driven clinicians, researchers, and academics to join our Research and Grants Scoring Panels, which fall under the governance of the Research Committee.

Scoring members are responsible for the College’s scoring and reviewing of grants, fellowships, awards and medals and bursary applications.

This position offers the opportunity to support the next generation of Surgeons and Clinicians at key stages in their career.

What do scoring members do?

Scoring members play an important role in College life to help us deliver our mission to improve patient outcomes and care. Members include NHS clinicians and practitioners and academics.

Together they assess research proposals from applicants who are applying for funding from the College and research briefs that describe a potential area of research. These research proposals and briefs cover a wide range of health and social care issues and challenges with the aim to benefit patients and improve care. The current portfolio of awards includes: Vascular Research, Paediatric Dentistry, Reconstructive Surgery, International Electives for Medical Students, a range of Cancer specialties, Recognition Awards, Orthopaedic Research and a number of Travelling Fellowships for example.

As a scoring member, you will be required to assess at least 2 grants/fellowships/awards/bursaries per year.

Who are we looking for?

The Research Committee are therefore seeking those who have a strong interest in research, career development and who would like to contribute to the work and mission of the College to promote the highest standards of surgical and dental practise. The position is not dependent on being based in Edinburgh or Scotland and we welcome applications from all over the UK and internationally.

We are looking for applicants from a range of different specialities and faculties however special consideration will go to those from backgrounds in:

  • Laboratory Research & Clinical Trials
  • Organ Transplantation Surgery and/or Research
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery and/or Research
  • Palliative Care, Treatment, Research and/or Surgery
  • Reconstructive / Plastic Surgery and/or Research
  • Esophageal Cancer Surgery and/or Research
  • Thoracic Surgery and/or Research
  • Colorectal Surgery and/or Research


The term of appointment is 3 years. Scoring Panel Membership does not attract payment.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you are required to be a Member or Fellow of the College and be a practising researcher, academic or clinician. Prior experience of scoring research and grants is desirable but not essential.
