Team Based Quality Reviews or TBQR is a generic term for traditional multi-professional team learning activities such as mortality and morbidity meetings (M&M) or significant event analysis reviews, which typically take place routinely across all surgical specialities and healthcare sectors. TBQR process refers to a wider activity that starts at the point of an 'event' through to the shared learning gained, action agreed and monitoring for the purpose of improvements where needed. This includes identifying and addressing unintended consequences of actions taken.

The “events” noted includes a focus on safety occurrences, mortality, outcomes, complaints, care improvement as well as exploring successes, innovation and complex care design. Its purpose is for collective learning and improvement in care delivered and supporting meaningful advancement to the wellbeing of staff. It recognises the importance of the role of high functioning teams and its relationship with complex sociotechnical systems in contributing to the provision of safe and effective care.

TBQR demonstrates the value of gaining different perspectives though a rapid but robust review process, to promote active engagement with patients and their families and to provide insight in developing and sustaining systems safety. The TBQR programme which is currently supported by NHS Education Scotland and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh seeks to embed evidence-based structure into such review processes through the provision of training, educational resources, tools and frameworks underpinned by Human Factors and Systems Thinking sciences.

Learning Style

There are two components to this course, as follows:

• Online / e-Learning training module. This pre-workshop module supports the learner in their understanding of the TBQR process, its underlying principles and provides an overview of designing quality and safety review pathways.

• Face-to-face workshops which will involve interactive lectures on core topics relevant to safety reviews and practical work.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of this course is to develop a surgical workforce that is equipped in concepts of safety and quality reviews, using updated safety science. This course is designed to complement existing policies and frameworks on safety reviews and will be relevant to anyone working in a surgical setting.

Learning Outcomes

Following successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

(1) Discuss the purpose of Team Based Quality Review (TBQR), its principles and its relevance in Surgical practice;

(2) Describe a Team Based Quality Review process or pathway in Surgery, using Human Factors principles to support improvement in work and patient safety;

(3) Consider a Systems Thinking approach using relevant frameworks to conduct analysis of cases in TBQR or M&M setting and facilitate learning and improvement in practice;

(4) Use the TBQR process within a simulated scenario for the purpose of understanding how we can identify strengths and weaknesses to improve resilience within the system;

(5) Identify how TBQR can be used in your organisation to provide a platform for sharing of learning, facilitate innovation, support psychology safety, enhance surgical training, staff wellbeing, patient engagement, governance and improved patient outcomes.

What is RCSEd’s course cancellation policy?

What happens if RCSEd cancels a course I am booked on?
On occasion, RCSEd may need to cancel a course, for example if we are affected by an event out with our control or if it is not financially viable for us to deliver the course. If we do need to cancel, we will let you know as soon as possible and provide you with a full refund of course fees paid.

RCSEd shall incur no further liability (eg. travel or accommodation costs). You may wish to consider taking out appropriate travel insurance for any non-refundable costs you may incur when arranging to attend the course.

What happens if I need to cancel my place on a course I am booked?
If you cancel your place more than four weeks before the event date, you will incur an administration fee of 10% (or £50, whichever is greater) of the total course fee. NB: For course fees £250 and under, the cancellation fee is £30)

If you cancel your place less than four weeks before the course date, once the course has started, or you do not notify us, the total course fee will be charged, and no refund will be given.

Please also note that you cannot transfer your place on a Course to someone else. This is because many of our courses have a waiting list, and we have an obligation to honour this.

Can I cancel a course booking online?
NO, cancellations must be made directly with the education team by email (education@rcsed.ac.uk).
Can I transfer to another date for the same course?
YES, you can transfer to another date by contacting the Education section directly (education@rcsed.ac.uk). Please note that you can transfer only once and transfers can only be made if more than 4 weeks prior to the start of the course, without incurring additional costs. Should you cancel again, no refund shall be given.

How do I book a place on an RCSEd course?

You can book a place for all our courses by visiting the RCSEd website, and selecting the course you wish to book. Please note that you will need to register with the website in order to book.

What payment methods do RCSEd accept?

Visa and MasterCard are accepted on the RCSEd website and over the phone to the education team.

All course bookings will receive a booking confirmation email: this email acts as your receipt.

Request an Invoice: If your course fees will be paid by a third party (eg trust, hospital, charitable fund) and they wish to be invoiced then they must provide us with an official purchase order. We are unable to process applications without this.

The purchase order should be submitted with the application form and can be emailed to education@rcsed.ac.uk. Please note that we can only invoice organisations and not individuals. Please check with your hospital or trust, as some may require you to pay yourself and then claim the money back.
