Overview

This one-day practical course will be delivered annually at RCSEd Edinburgh and RCSEd Birmingham venues. Faculty will comprise Rouleaux Club members (senior vascular trainees) and VSSB consultants. Places are strictly limited, This course is for medical students but in the event we are unable to fill the course with medical students, we may offer a limited number of places to Foundation Doctors. When booking, you will be charged £40 in order to secure your place. A £30 deposit will be returnable upon confirmation of attendance.

Learning Style

The day will consist of talks and demos/practicals but with the focus on ensuring delegates have as much hands on time as possible. They will hear about a typical day of both a Vascular Trainee and Consultant as well as an overview of the type of operations performed. Delegates will split up into small groups for the demo sessions. Four different scenarios will be provided at each time point each running simultaneously : 1) Suturing skills/ transverse arteriotomy repair (embolectomy); 2) Patch angioplasty; 3) Basic endovascular skills; 4) Case based discussions.

Aims & Objectives

To increase awareness of vascular surgery as a potential career option for undergraduate medical students by: • Providing an overview of vascular surgery as a career • Providing hands-on practical skills experience relevant to vascular surgery • Interacting with current trainees and consultants on a small-group level • Bringing together potential future vascular surgeons in a welcoming environment, with opportunities for students to provide feedback and ideas on how to improve recruitment into vascular surgery

  1. Have an overview of what vascular surgeons do.
  2. Have an understanding of the life of a vascular surgery consultant and trainee
  3. Technical aspects of vascular and endovascular surgery
