RCSEd and Medtronic Surgical Skills Competition 2023/2024

RCSEd & Medtronic National Student Surgical Skills Competition offers all medical students the chance to stretch their skills by competing against their peers from across the UK. The College and Medtronic have collaborated to create two brand new challenges in the form of an online quiz and a skills box which will be sent to the highest marking students from each medical school. All competition registrants will also receive complimentary affiliate membership with RCSEd.

How does it work?

Stage One:

Students register for the competition.

Stage Two:

Students will be sent details on how to compete in the first heat - an online quiz which will test your knowledge!

Stage Three:

The highest scoring students from each medical school from heat one will advance to heat two and be sent a ‘skills box’ containing both surgical equipment and synthetic organs. Students will then be given four weeks to practice a set of skills and upload a video of themselves demonstrating these skills to the best of their ability.  Full details will be included with the skills box.

Stage Four:

The highest scoring student from each medical school will progress to the final stage and be invited to Edinburgh to compete in our Grand Final.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Medtronic are delighted to announce that the winner and runners up of the 2024 Surgical Skills Competition are:

Winner: Tom Adamson from Newcastle University

Second Place: Eric Dos Santos De Andrade - University of Liverpool

Third Place: Natalia Mojica - University of Birmingham

Congratulations to the University of Birmingham for taking the top spot in the video round.
