How we work
The Global Surgery Foundation exists to build sustainable surgical capacity in communities suffering from a chronic shortage of care. To do this we seek out partnerships to ensure that we have the regional knowledge, expertise and resources to ensure that our projects have an impact that is sustainable, long-term and widespread.
Our Projects
For people living under these conditions safe surgery is an aspiration instead of a reality. The Global Surgery Foundation will combat the drastic disparity in care received by communities around the world and will not rest until each and every individual has access to the care they deserve. The Global Surgery Foundation was established by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2015 to tackle inequality in surgical care on a global scale.
The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery published the same year uncovered some profoundly shocking truths, chiefly that 5 billion people worldwide lack access to safe and affordable surgical care. An insufficient surgical workforce is one of the major barriers to the safety of communities the world over, with limited resources being stretched beyond breaking point on an unprecedented scale.

The funding we have received so far has allowed us to do so much already, however we are reliant on external investment to remedy the inequality that weighs heavily on so many communities. We will continue to advance surgical care as far as our resources will allow, but are unable to widen our scope to ever more ambitious projects without further support.
