Professor Mike Griffin, RCSEd President, has signed an agreement with Professor April Roslani, President of the College of Surgeons of Malaysia, to support the delivery of Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) courses in Malaysia.

During the 48th Annual Academic Session, a joint meeting of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka and RCSEd in Galle on 23 August 2019, Professors Griffin and Roslani were joined by RCSEd Vice President Professor Rowan Parks and Honorary Secretary Dr Judy Evans to witness the signing.

The agreement is for three years where RCSEd will support The College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia through access to NOTSS educational resources, advice and faculty development to benefit surgical trainees and practitioners.

NOTSS was first delivered in Malaysia in 2015 and has been presented in the USA, Nepal, Malta, Africa (COSECSA), Kuwait and Hong Kong.

Mr Simon Paterson-Brown, Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and key developer of the NOTSS programme, commented:

"The role of non-technical skills in improving overall surgical management is now well established and the NOTSS course, developed by the RCSEd along with Aberdeen University, is increasingly being undertaken in the UK, USA and further afield. The key ingredients to establishing regular high-quality courses requires faculty development and the College has been working very hard bringing in keen and highly competent surgeons to further expand the delivery of these NOTSS courses. In order to establish them overseas it is imperative that institutions develop their own faculty with help from the College, and we have delighted to work with the Malaysian College of Surgeons over the last five years to help them develop their own faculty. This is part of the planned 'franchising' of these courses and because we have been working so closely with our Malaysian colleagues over the last five years, we are absolutely delighted that they have become our first franchise partner for the NOTSS courses. We look forward to working closely with them over the next few years as they roll out the NOTSS programme."
