Question Bank Manager
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is an independent membership organisation concerned principally with the education, training and assessment of Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and Doctors who are involved in the surgical care of patients. Founded in 1505, the College currently has a membership approaching 27,000 in approximately 100 countries throughout the world.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly capable candidate to join our professional team as Question Bank Manager. The Professional Activities Department incorporates Examinations, Psychometrics, Education, International Activities, Applications and Online Services, IT Infrastructure, AV Support Services, and the Systems Transformation Team. The Examinations Section includes the Question Bank, Surgical Examinations and Dental Examinations teams respectively. The Section organises and conducts over 100 examinations each year in the UK and overseas for around 6,000 candidates.
The main objective of the Question Bank Manager is to lead the staff in Question Bank to ensure all content for the dental and surgical examinations is produced to the highest possible standard and provided to the examinations conveners, leads and co-ordinators within set timescales.
This involves inputting, maintaining and updating the questions held within the various banks; processing examination data; liaising with examiners and clinical question bank managers to construct and select questions; then compiling, formatting, proof-reading and producing examination papers. The team create mark sheets and quality assure all exam processes before, during and after the exam, including standard setting (the process for establishing the pass mark). Other responsibilities include liaising with assessment specialists within and outside the organisation, assisting with related quality assurance processes, organising question writing sessions and managing the budget.
This post is advertised at a time of transition to a new IT system for managing our Question Banks as part of the College’s major systems transformation project. This permanent post is therefore an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and develop your skills in project management experience.
Possessing excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, you will also be able to demonstrate good IT literacy (MS Word, Excel, databases and bespoke systems). You will be highly organised with meticulous attention to detail; be able to prioritise tasks and work on different projects simultaneously and employ a methodical and conscientious approach to your work. Confidentiality, diplomacy and discretion are also essential. Demonstrable experience of working in quality assurance (ideally in an educational setting), leadership and managing budgets would be highly advantageous.
The post holder may be required to travel and work away from Edinburgh during certain examinations; this may require overnight stays away from the Question Bank Manager’s normal place of residence, and, possibly, travel overseas.
