Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers

The current Surgical Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers (FST), Mr David O’Regan, will demit office on 31 March 2022. Applications are therefore invited for appointment to the post of FST Surgical Director from 1 April 2022.

The Director is responsible, in collaboration with the Faculty Executive, for leading, developing and steering the FST in pursuit of its objectives and activities, which include:

  1. Championing the role and recognition of the surgical trainer;
  2. Promoting the development of current and future surgical trainers;
  3. Enhancing the quality of surgical training through the promotion of high-quality education and teaching;
  4. Setting and maintaining standards in surgical training and education; and
  5. Promoting the FST as an authoritative institution in matters of professional, educational or public interest concerning surgical education and training.

The Director plays a critical and high-profile role in the executive leadership of the Faculty and is supported in this critical leadership role by the wider Executive Committee, including two Deputy Directors, the Honorary Secretary and the Honorary Treasurer. The Executive Committee, in turn is supported by an Advisory Board which is representative of both the FST membership and the wider surgical education and training community.

Person Specification

Members and Fellows of the Faculty are invited to apply for the role of Surgical Director.  Applicants must be:

  1. A FST Member or Fellow in good standing with their College and the Faculty;
  2. A GMC-recognised trainer;
  3. Demonstrably involved in surgical training;
  4. Approachable, communicative and un-biased; and
  5. In good standing with their regulator.

Potential nominees should also consider carefully the following matters:

  • This opportunity is open to all FST Members and Fellows. However, potential nominees should note that success in this role will require the ability to commit sufficient time to its duties, including ensuring a physical presence in the UK for key responsibilities and to attend regular meetings.
  • Applicants may be required to demonstrate that they have the necessary time and capacity to deliver the duties of the role successfully.
  • This role is not remunerated but expenses legitimately and reasonably incurred while on FST business will be reimbursed.

Application and Appointment Process

The appointment of the Surgical Director is an open competition and will be determined by an appointment panel following a suitable shortlisting and panel interview process and will be subject to ratification by College Council.

The following documentation must be submitted, by the deadline for applications, 10:00 on Monday 6 December 2021 to fst@rcsed.ac.uk:

A completed FST application form;

  1. A full CV;
  2. A supporting statement of up to 500 words, detailing the applicant’s suitability for the Surgical Director role: and
  3. A signed note of support from the Chief Executive or Medical Director of the applicant’s employing institution.

Duration of Appointment and Time Commitment

The successful candidate shall serve as Surgical Director for an initial three-year term and shall thereafter be eligible for re-appointment on an annual basis for up to a further two years.

It will be expected that the Surgical Director will attend and chair, in person, four meetings per year of the FST Executive Committee and Advisory Board and undertake at least a further twenty days of activity related to the work of the Faculty a year.

Termination of Appointment

The Surgical Director may resign by giving two months’ notice in writing to the Director of Faculties and Governance of the College. If the Surgical Director does not satisfactorily meet the standards of the College or the Faculty, they may be asked to demit office.

Duties of the Surgical Director

The primary duties of the Surgical Director of the FST are to:

  1. Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Faculty of Surgical Trainers and drive forward its activities;
  2. Organise and support local and national events and encourage support for such events;
  3. Attend, chair and assist in organising the annual Faculty of Surgical Trainers meeting;
  4. Assist with scoring FST applications; and
  5. Lead and work with the other members of the FST Executive Committee and Advisory Board to strengthen the membership base and financial sustainability of the Faculty

Deputy Surgical Director of The Faculty of Surgical Trainers 

One of the two current Deputy Surgical Directors of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers (FST), Mr Alex Phillips, will demit office in December 2021. Applications are therefore invited for appointment to the post of FST Deputy Surgical Director from 1 January 2022.

The two FST Deputy Surgical Directors play key leadership roles within the Faculty and assist the Surgical Director in developing and steering its activities. Deputy Directors contribute to the maintenance and development of standards and processes to support the continued expansion of the Associateship, Membership and Fellowship of the Faculty. They may also be responsible for overseeing the development and maintenance of educational provision and membership benefits, drawing upon contributions and input from the rest of the Faculty Executive Committee and Advisory Board. The Deputy Surgical Directors will also represent the Surgical Director at meetings and events as necessary.

Duties of the Surgical Director

The primary duties of a Deputy Surgical Director of the FST are to:

  • Provide strategic direction to the Faculty of Surgical Trainers and drive forward its activities, working alongside the Surgical Director;
  • Lead and coordinate specific workstreams of activity in pursuit of the Faculty’s strategic aims, eliciting support and contributions from the Faculty Executive, Advisory Board and wider membership;
  • Attend a minimum of two of the four meetings of the Executive Committee and Advisory Board each year;
  • Organise and support local, national or online events and encourage support for such events;
  • Attend and assist in organising the annual Faculty of Surgical Trainers conference;
  • Deputise for the Surgical Director as necessary; and
  • Assist with scoring FST applications.
