This weekend the Prime Minister announced a £1.8 billion funding to upgrade NHS hospitals in England and buy new equipment.
RCSEd President, Professor Mike Griffin, said:
"We welcome the funding announcement of £1.8 billion for capital projects in a small number of hospitals in England but this will not be a quick fix for many of the issues the NHS is facing.
A greater emphasis on preventing illness is needed, and we still await the Green paper on social care and hope that this is forthcoming.
We are also facing urgent workforce issues, including the current pension issue preventing senior consultants from taking up additional shifts and, in some cases, forcing them to retire early. We must continue to address these issues in order to ensure we can continue to treat patients safely".
