CQC's Adult inpatient survey 2015

Responding to the release of the CQC’s 2015 adult inpatient survey, Mr Michael Lavelle-Jones, President of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, said:

“The primary role of our College, and the chief concern of our membership, is to ensure the safety of our patients and provide them with the best possible care. It is therefore heartening to see that patients are now reporting a number of improvements in NHS hospitals in a wide variety of areas. These range from more patients feeling involved in decisions about their care, to improved cleanliness of the hospitals themselves. As a College we are proud to have lead the way in the development of non-technical skills training, with a focus on communication skills, so it is particularly pleasing to see that an increased proportion of patients are reporting that medical staff answered their questions in a way they could understand.

“However, it is important to recognise that the survey also reveals areas where patients have experienced a decline in standards. It is of great concern that one of these areas is the information given to patients before being discharged from hospital, with a smaller proportion of respondents reporting that they had been given all the information they needed to arrange appropriate care. There is also a worryingly high number of patients reporting that they did not get enough support to help them recover or manage their condition after discharge. Speedy discharge with an appropriate care package is essential to the sustainability of the NHS, so we are calling on all Trusts to prioritise improvements in this area.”
