Public Health Funding

Mr Ian Ritchie, PRCSEd, has today warned that the proposed £200 million cuts to public health budgets in England will significantly hamper efforts to reduce NHS costs.

Mr Ritchie said:

"NHS England's Five Year Forward View recognises the impact that smoking, alcohol abuse, obesity and inactivity are having on the NHS's finite resources. These cuts will ultimately increase the pressure on these resources at a time when investment is required to integrate health and social care.

"Prevention is always better than cure. With surgery being one of the more expensive forms of treatments, initiatives that ultimately reduce the demand for surgery should be supported.

"I will be writing to the Secretary of State to express our reservations with this proposal."
