For the first time in its 500 year history, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (www.rcsed.ac.uk), dedicated to promoting the highest standards in surgical education, training and clinical practice, today announces the opening of a new base outside of Scotland.

With four out of five of its UK members (over 11,000 professionals) based in England and Wales, RCSEd chose Birmingham’s bustling and historic Colmore business district to offer medical students, trainee surgeons and Fellows throughout Britain a permanent and convenient focal presence and further opportunities for courses and events.

Around 70% of the College’s membership live or work within a 100 mile radius of Birmingham, which made the choice of the city a natural one for its convenience and transport connectivity, as well as its currently playing host to many other key healthcare organisations. As early as this week, Birmingham will already bear witness to the College’s cutting edge activities, with RCSEd’s Faculty of Surgical Trainers (the only one of its kind in the UK) holding its Annual Meeting there on 24 October, on the theme of computerised simulation. The exciting scientific event will bring together world experts to address how the latest technology - such as systems used in training airline pilots - can be used to enhance both technical and non-technical performance in surgery.

According to President of the RCSEd Ian Ritchie;

"Patient safety lies at the heart of everything we do as a College and is the principle which guides our membership. We therefore feel strongly that we need to provide the best services and facilities possible to everyone who has chosen to be part of our College, wherever they are based. In recent years, we have been investing heavily in providing services to our membership across Britain by expanding our advisor networks, offering more exam locations and increasing regionally-held events, activities and courses.  Our new centre will confirm this commitment by providing a focal point for our activity in England and Wales and cementing our position as a College with a strength and relevance throughout the UK.”

Over the coming weeks the RCSEd, one of the oldest surgical corporations in the world and which has a membership of over 22,000 professionals spread across 100 countries worldwide, will be releasing details of an extensive programme of activities planned for when the centre officially opens in Spring 2014.

Mr Ritchie, who is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon, adds:

"Through these developments we aim to provide a choice for our membership, as to where and how they interact with our College and make use of its services and facilities. I hope that many of our Fellows, Members and Affiliates, as well as our colleagues in all areas of healthcare will be able to join us for the opening events and that they will feel at home in and make use of both our Birmingham base and Edinburgh headquarters for many years to come.”
