We offer congratulations and a warm welcome to all of the new Fellows and Members attending the first Diploma Ceremony of 2020. With their family and friends, diplomates have travelled from across the globe to receive their awards and celebrate their success.

Diplomates accepting their awards are joined by eminent guests receiving special awards, including The Right Honourable Professor the Lord Kakkar who will receive an Honorary Fellowship and who will deliver an address to the diplomates at the end of the ceremony. The award will be presented by RCSEd President Professor Michael Griffin OBE who said:

“We are absolutely delighted and privileged to have The Rt Hon Professor The Lord Kakkar to receive his Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. It is apposite that his illustrious father, who was Professor of Surgery and Kings College London, received his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1964. The Lord Kakkar continues the outstanding work into thrombosis and novel methods of anticoagulation which has made such a difference to so many surgical patients worldwide”.

Also receiving special awards are Professor Davide Lomanto, Professor of Surgery at the National University of Singapore who will be admitted to Fellowship Ad Hominem, and Dr Michael S Molloy, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Ireland East Hospital Group, who will receive the award of Fellowship in Surgery Without Examination.

The Dundas Medal 2019, in commemoration of Dr Charles Robert Dundas, will be awarded to the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) End of Life Care and Speech and Language Therapy Service. The Award acknowledges their significant contribution to improve the provision of palliative care for patients when they are in hospital. To receive the medal are representatives from SaTH. The medal is jointly awarded from RCSEd and the charity Palliation and The Caring Hospital (PATCH).
