RCSEd Responds to Investigation into Bullying in the NHS

Responding to today’s newspaper investigation into bullying in the NHS, Professor Mike Griffin OBE, President of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) said:
“The Doctors Association UK (DAUK) have done a great service in highlighting the real impact that bullying has on doctors throughout the NHS, presenting hundreds of real life examples to illustrate the widespread and often devastating impact it can have on the individuals involved.
“Bullying also directly affects patient safety, so through our #letsremoveit campaign we will continue to engage with clinicians and healthcare providers to try and address this issue at source.
“In Belfast today, RCSEd will be hosting our fourth national anti-bullying symposium. Together with DAUK and a host of other healthcare organisations we will do all that we can to work across the entirety of the healthcare professions to tackle the many causes of such behaviour and promote more civil, respectful and supportive workplaces.”
Today’s event in Belfast is jointly hosted by RCSEd and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), and will focus on developing further practical solutions to the problem of undermining and bullying in the medical workplace.
The event programme has been designed to help delegates develop techniques to manage and address workplace bullying; to highlight and signpost the range of support on offer; and to develop links across the NHS professions to share ideas, pool resources and devise practical solutions to this problem.
