The College is delighted to invite applications for "The Surgeon as an Athlete" - Younger Fellows’ 2020 Residential Forum. The two-day event will combine lectures, group discussions, and outdoor activities — all in an informal and relaxed atmosphere at Ashorne Hill, Leamington Spa on 25-27 March 2020.

College representatives at the Forum will include the President, Professor Michael Griffin, who will be in attendance to listen to the concerns of Younger Fellows and use these discussions to help shape future Council policy.

Eligible applicants will be RCSEd Fellows in good standing, and within 10 years of having received their Fellowship.  Delegates will be expected to fund their own travel to and from the venue. Meals, accommodation and mandatory activities will be subsidised. Applicants selected to attend the forum will ensure a regional and specialty spread.

CPD points will be awarded at this once in-a-career opportunity.

Email outreach@rcsed.ac.uk to request an application form.

The deadline for applications is Friday 10th January 2020.

Past Residential Forums

Participants in the 2017 YF Forum at Carden Park on the theme “Healthy Surgeon, Healthy Patient” provided overwhelmingly positive feedback from having attended the forum, and commented that they felt better equipped to deal with stress and manage the pressures of a surgical career, through having attended the forum which in 2017, was designed to provide insight and techniques to be used for dealing with these issues.

Key points delegates said they took away from the 2017 YF Forum were:

“I appreciated the importance of the team before, but I now have constructive and practical ways to improve this as a Consultant. Also ensuring the team is valued and an awareness of the different ‘hats’ a Consultant must wear.”

“Don’t be afraid to voice it if you’re feeling overwhelmed”

“I feel more supported and relieved that everyone experiences stress from their career. Learning from others will be invaluable in the future.”

“I realise that we all have stress and it is ok to experience this. It is not a weakness.

“Set aside time for activities/hobbies and family time”

“A problem shared, is a problem solved”

“Teamwork is essential. We are really well placed to initiate change. Don’t forget the importance/respect of being a consultant.”
